How to add and manage notes
Write allows the insertion of two types of notes:
- Endnotes
- Footnotes
Endnote
To add an end-of-book note, start by clicking on the "notes" function, which is visible in the left-hand menu, and add the Note text:
Repeat the operation for all the notes that you intend to include at the end of the book.
At this point, go back to the chapter editor by clicking on the "book" icon at the top of the left menu and connect the inserted notes to the text:
- select the text you want to link to the note
- click on the function "editor internal links" and select the note that you want to link. In this way, the selected word will become an active link and you can reach the content of the note by clicking on it.
Footnote
To add a footnote, click at the top of the menu on [1], type the text of the footnote, select the part of text or point of text you want to link to the footnote, click at the top of the menu on “internal links”, select footnotes and choose the reference footnote.
NB. The footnotes will be visible at the end of the chapter in which the word related to the note is inserted.
If you need to change the Note number, you can do this by clicking on the "Fix note numbering" icon, which is located on the Book Tab, within the "Actions" tab:
By clicking on "Note numbering correction", the program analyzes all the links to the notes and all the text of the notes and performs a normalization of the note numbers (both in the link and in the note). This feature is particularly useful in books with lots of notes. With these types of books, when the author or publisher move or delete notes in the editor, the numbering can skip throughout the editing phase. The note number autocorrect feature solves this problem.
Notes in the sub-chapters
Sub-chapters can be:
- included: they are included within the text of the container chapter, so they are seen below each other;
- separated: they are generated as independent content, included in the chapter only at the index level, but not in its text.
You can choose from the Book Tab whether to set the sub-chapters as included or excluded by clicking on "settings".
Ifthe sub-chapters are of the first type, they don't support notes. If you need to insert notes within sub-chapters, it's advisable to follow one of these two options:
a) Set the sub-chapters as separated ("stand-alone") using the specific option on the book Tab;
b) Use only endnotes, and not footnotes.
